VwCON2 Hotwash

Okay VwCON2 has come and gone. Time for the Hotwash!! What went well. What went poorly. How can we make the next one better? Let 'er rip!!

From my POV, VwCON was pretty much an overall success - considering this is still a relatively new approach to a gaming convention. We had about 2-3 times the participation in comparison with VWCON 1.

We tried to do more (and this had its good and bad results). But, overall, I think those who participated enjoyed themselves ... maybe even learned something (I know I did!)!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Brent and Gary's Webinar on VASSAL ... I think they did a great job! I was disappointed the DESKTOP SHARING capability of the webconferencing software we were using didn't work and the video capture software I was using didn't work either. I'll investigate how to overcome these technical setbacks before the next VwCON.

  2. The Memoir '44 vTournament. I thought your suggestion about playing preliminary round before the actual convention weekend was brilliant. Playing the semifinals/finals during the convention had a mixed result since half of the semi-finalists were not able to participate.

  3. The geographical diversity of our participants. I think it was VERY cool that we had players from Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, US West Coast, US East Coast, and the heartland participating. The 'live' webinar with co-hosts from Australia and the US Midwest was especially impressive to me!!

LOWLIGHTS:

  1. I think the most disappointing to me was that after MARK WALKER agreed to be the guest for the fireside chat, no one signed up (truthfully, I was embarrassed) and regretfully agreed with his assesment when he decided to cancel.

  2. I think I personally tried to do too much and the WELLINGTON and THE BURNING BLUE vassal modules and their associated demos were the casualties.

  3. The failures of the CAC,WNW,and TLS vTournaments. I think holding the conference the week after Easter (and associated spring break/vacation for some of our participants - including myself) may have been a dagger for our vTournaments.

So there's my opinion. What say you?

First off thanks for all the effort you put in. This is relatively

new I guess for most of us and it will time to bed down.

What went well -

The Memoir 44 format went well, and although I actually only played

one opponent myself (see below), this is the way to go IMO. The

actuall format was right as well. This outweighs any down sides,

with the exception that I felt not playing my games let people down.

Like many, this takes more time than it looks and two tournies in

that time frame is tight, at least for me. I never got to play C&CA

as a consequence and that was sad.

For me in the UK the time difference was awkward and I need to work

out a way of tackling that. I also missed my potential semi glory,

and I could not seem to access the web site for a while. On the

other hand I missed semifinal humiliation as well ....

So, I played two games in the tournie and another whilst waiting

around - it was fun and please can we do it again! As to timing -

avoiding holidays is good and every 3 months probably is about

right. The other option is some form of ladder for some games.
